Language Arts Part B (Grade 7-9)

Course Description: This course is the foundation which prepares students for the rigors of a strong high school writing and literature program. The course integrates grammar, writing, literature, and vocabulary. The grammar portion of the course focuses on Part 2 and 3 of Analytical Grammar, which provides a systematic approach to learning sentence structure (through diagramming), parts of speech and their functions, usage, and punctuation. Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)  U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons which focus on two key aspects of writing: structure and style. Travel back in time to early United States history! This theme-based writing curriculum allows students to delve into the excitement of explorers, battles, land expansion, famous ships, and founding fathers while they learn to write with IEW’s Structure and Style writing method. The literature portion of the course is designed to help spark and foster a love of reading by introducing Newbury Award winning novels.  ​ Parental Involvement: Parents will need to remain involved by being aware of assignments, due dates, and student progress, as well as providing help for their individual student when needed. Language Arts
(Grade 6)

Course Description: This Language Adventure is the first step in our middle school language arts program. The course is designed for approximately 6th grade students to learn the traditions of a language arts program through teacher-guided, interactive lessons. Each week the class will contain 4 elements: Grammar, instruction and fun Vocabulary, introduction and review of words Writing Fundamentals Literature Adventure Projects – Students will complete two novel studies; one during the fall and one during the spring.  They will showcase the theme and what they learned by completing a hands-on project for each book Required Curriculum: TBD

High School English 1 (Grade 9-10)

Course Description: This course is designed for ninth grade students who desire a solid foundation in grammar, writing, and literature comprehension. Students will learn the basics of grammar, build vocabulary, and establish the groundwork for future literary criticism. The course will focus on developing each student into a strong writer by using the six traits of writing: content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Students will practice all types of writing including descriptive, expository, persuasive, and narrative. An MLA checklist and rubric will be used to grade all compositions objectively. Students will practice all types of writing.  Grammar instruction will include parts of speech, parts of the sentence, and basic usage and conventions. All worksheets for grammar, vocabulary, composition, and literature are provided on Toolbox. We will also examine and evaluate literature from a Christian perspective. Students should expect to work a minimum of two hours a day outside of class. ​ Parental Involvement: Please be prepared for weekly writing, reading, vocabulary, and grammar assignments. In addition, parents should be prepared to be involved in grading; parents will be responsible for grading literature questions for completion only, and grammar homework. Parents will enter the grades for these assignments. The specific editions of The Hiding Place and The Odyssey must be purchased without exception since portions will be read in class and the homework questions are coordinated with these editions.    ​ Prerequisites: Successful completion of our English 8 Class or proficiency as demonstrated on writing and grammar placement test. Required Curriculum: Instructor provides the additional curriculum for this class for a $50.00 curriculum fee. The Odyssey by Homer; translated by W.H.D. This theme-based writing curriculum exposes students to world history through cultural literature and the study of famous people and events while learning to write with IEW’s Structure and Style writing method. The literature portion of the course is designed to help spark and foster a love of reading by introducing Newbury Award winning novels. ​ Parental Involvement: Parents will need to remain involved by being aware of assignments, due dates, and student progress, as well as providing help for their individual student when needed. 2023-2024 Language Arts and English Classes

High School English 2 (Grade 10-12)

Course Description: This course is designed for tenth grade students. It is comprised of vocabulary and grammar studies in addition to extensive instruction in writing and literature. Grammar instruction will include the parts of speech, sentence parts, phrases, clauses, punctuation, and sentence diagramming. Students will complete short weekly writing assignments, master the five-paragraph essay, and experiment with other kinds of writing, as well. Students will format their papers according to the guidelines set forth in the newest edition of the MLA Handbook. The class will also examine and evaluate five classic titles from various periods in literary history. Authors typically covered are Harper Lee, Hemingway, Moliere, Austen, and Shakespeare. Students will also select one title to read independently. Course syllabus also includes an oral presentation and a creative project. Students should expect to work a minimum of one hour per day outside of class. Parental Involvement: Please be prepared to oversee students’ weekly writing, reading, vocabulary, and grammar assignments. In addition, parents will be responsible for reading over writing assignments, scoring grammar assignments, and verifying the completion of vocabulary and reading homework. Students enrolling in this course must have access to a word processing program and possess basic computer skills. Prerequisites: Successful completion of our English 9/10 Class or proficiency as demonstrated on placement test. Required Curriculum: Instructor provides the additional curriculum for this class for a $50.00 curriculum fee. High School English 3 (Grade 11-12)

Course Description: This course is designed for the 11th or 12th grade student. The student will read and discuss from each of the four genres of literature: poetry, prose, drama, and nonfiction with regular writing assignments. Grammar instruction will focus on the concepts required for the SAT. Each novel/play in the course will culminate in essay composition. The student will be led toward advanced levels of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of literature. The course also includes guided instruction on a formal research paper in MLA format as well as a college admissions-style essay. This course requires about 100 pages of reading per week as well as four hours per week of additional writing and grammar. Students should expect to work a minimum of one hour per day outside of class. Past students have found this class to be most beneficial in preparing them for the SAT and college English. Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to read along with the student and engage in literary discussions at home, but it is not required. Parents are expected to monitor student progress and time management at home. Success in this course is dependent upon the student maintaining consistent daily reading and study schedule. *In an effort to place all students in an environment in which they will best succeed, PLACEMENT TESTS are required  for all of our NEW students enrolling in Language Arts 8 OR HIGHER. Class placement is based on grammar and writing readiness as evidenced on the placement test. It is not based on the grade or age of the student. A student could be placed in a class at a lower level than anticipated so that the skills they need for future success will be firmly set.  It may also be required that a student brush up on the skills necessary to excel in a given class prior to the start of that class.

  • Class tuition is $499 per year (approximately $15 per class)

  • There is a $50 registration fee per student.

  • Some classes have an additional fee listed in the course description if curriculum is provided.

  • All tuition and fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
